Shieldhall Tunnel Development

Editorial & PR Photography | Promotional Video

The Background

We have worked with this industry giant for the past six years on a variety of photography and video projects. The Shieldhall Tunnel development has been the largest and most satisfying of these ventures with Scottish Water.

Scottish Water approached SNS Group to capture the journey of developing a 3.1 mile-long tunnel which formed part of the biggest upgrade to Glasgow’s waste water network in over one hundred years. This would take us from the top of cranes to deep underground!

The Approach

In the early stages, we carried out a series of recces – these are essentially dress rehearsals for the job – to run through particular sections that would need handled with care. Working on a live building site was challenging, going through rigorous safety checks and often dealing with small, confined spaces.

There was also a degree of unpredictably and often we would have to be flexible with changes to timings that meant some very early morning alarm clocks set and a few late nights!

Different lenses and locations were chosen that would allow us to go above and beyond in terms of creativity. For photography, we identified opportunities to use the super-wide fisheye lens. We utilised the adaptability of the Go Pro to get some unique shots. Whether it was attaching it to cranes or having it travel down the tunnel itself, these helped to enhance each promo video.

The Results

Over the course of two years, we were able to chart the key moments throughout this hugely significant project for Scottish Water. Our videos were shown on national television and are available on the Scottish Water website alongside an extensive gallery of our images.

As a Glasgow based creative agency, it was incredible to learn of the positive impact this project will have for the people of Glasgow. The tunnel will help to lower the risk of flooding and also improve environmental conditions.

“The striking footage and stills were undoubtedly a major part of the success of the Shieldhall Tunnel ‘story’ in terms of the widespread coverage it received from the media and the impact it had on our website and social media. SNS’s ability to illustrate the story in a very engaging way helped us increase awareness of the scale and nature of the project and improve understanding about its importance to the environment and economy in the Glasgow area. SNS’s staff were highly professional throughout and a joy to work with.”
